St. Mary’s Girls Higher Secondary School is the precursor of an exclusive educational institution for girls of all age deftly run and managed by the sisters of St. Joseph’s of Lyons (SJL)). This distinct centre of Learning at Devakottai in Sivagangai district stands tall among other schools in the vicinity.

Introduction

Revisiting the history of the school, one finds god’s will manifested in its establishment. In 1942 accompanied by Rev. R. Bonner when Rev. Sr. Rose Benedict visited Mr. Setham, The director of schools at Chennai seeking his approval to start De Britto School for boys, to their surprise he presented unto them a proposal to launch a school for girls in Devakottai.Deeming it to be God’s voice Mother Rose instantly responded to it and began roping in the support and counsel of the prominent townsmen who enthusiastically rendered them in all possible ways.

Left with no space or infrastructure, and after availing Fr. Bonner’s generous consent, the school had a humble beginning as an annexure of De Britto School. It was duly pioneered by Rev. Mother Annuncia, Rev. Mother Serani, Rev. Sr. Virginea and Rev. Sr. Monicka. In June 1943, when Rev. Sr. Ernest began steering forth the institution, the SJL sisters went from door to door coaxing girls to come forward to be educated. Eventually, the school’s strength started steadily growing high, paving way for the institution of a separate campus with on Mar. 19, 1947 with classes till grade 9.

Since then, the school has been ever surging ahead in the field of education. It has been upgraded into a Higher Secondary school in 1979 and a Teacher Training School has been initiated in 1985. Combating unique challenges and adopting newer techniques and strategies in school education, the institution has crossed the significant 50th and 60th milestones of its phenomenal journey of girl’s education reaching the present 75th, comprising an astounding student strength of 2078.
